Beyond the Gym: Men's Aesthetic and Hormone Treatments That Actually Move the Needle
There's a new wave of men's health care that's expanding beyond the annual physical, the gym, and a protein shake into the territory that actually addresses how men look and feel as they age as part of evidence-based “maintenance.”
At Bare, we treat men with the same rigor and depth we bring to women. The protocols are different because, like it or not, biologically men are different. But the philosophy is identical: understand what's happening systemically, treat the root causes, and build results that last.
Here's what that looks like in practice.
Laser Hair Removal
Laser hair removal is one of the highest-satisfaction treatments men receive and one they're often surprised to find is designed for them.
The mechanism of action (selective photothermolysis targeting melanin in the hair follicle) is completely sex-neutral. Men, in fact, often achieve excellent results because coarser, darker hair contains more melanin and therefore absorbs laser energy more efficiently. The treatment is more effective when there's more chromophore to target.
Common treatment areas for men:
Back and shoulders: Consistently one of the most requested areas. Men who've done back LHR uniformly describe it as one of the best decisions they've made. No more contorting their bodies or having to ask for help shaving, razor burn, waxing, or feeling hot and itchy under certain shirts..
Chest: Increasingly common, particularly for men who swim, cycle, or simply prefer a cleaner aesthetic.
Neck and beard line: Creates cleaner borders and dramatically reduces razor bumps, folliculitis, and ingrown hairs. This is a genuine quality-of-life improvement for men who shave regularly and fight ingrown hairs.
Ears and nose area: Fast, precise, and one of the most appreciated treatments among men who've had it done.
Underarms: Eliminates odor-trapping hair, reduces sweating, and means never having to think about it again.
Legs: Most common among cyclists, swimmers, and triathletes, both for performance and for comfort, but becoming increasingly popular in men just looking to defuzz.
A typical treatment series requires 6–8 sessions spaced 4–10 weeks apart. Most patients achieve 80–90% permanent hair reduction, with occasional maintenance sessions for any remaining fine hairs.
Hair Restoration
Hair loss is one of the most emotionally significant changes men navigate, and now one of the most treatable when addressed appropriately.
Androgenic alopecia, the most common form, is driven by dihydrotestosterone (DHT). Testosterone is converted to DHT by the enzyme 5-alpha reductase. In men with genetic susceptibility, DHT binds to androgen receptors in scalp follicles and progressively miniaturizes them, producing finer, shorter hairs until the follicle goes dormant.
The key clinical fact: earlier intervention produces significantly better outcomes. A follicle that is miniaturizing but still producing hair can often be rescued or slowed. A dormant follicle is far harder to reactivate.
Our hair restoration protocols are individualized based on the patient's pattern of loss, degree of miniaturization, and goals. Approaches may include:
DHT-blocking topical formulations that address the primary driver at the follicular level
Exosome therapy that increase follicular blood flow and nutrient delivery
Keralase Treatments — a treatment using growth factors and the UltraMD to stimulate follicular activity and drive product to the root of the follicle.
Nutritional assessment for deficiencies (particularly iron, zinc, biotin, and vitamin D) that accelerate loss
Hormone optimization — because testosterone and DHT exist in a dynamic relationship, and addressing overall hormonal health is often relevant to hair restoration outcomes
We assess each patient's specific situation before recommending a protocol. There's no universal approach, and frankly, not every company offering hair treatments is evaluating the underlying biology.
Men's Detox Facial
Men's skin is not just bigger women's skin. It's physiologically different in ways that genuinely require a different treatment approach.
Male skin is approximately 25% thicker. Sebaceous activity is higher due to testosterone, which means congestion patterns, pore size, and oil-related concerns are different. Decades of daily shaving create a specific category of concerns like folliculitis, ingrown hairs, chronic barrier disruption, post-shave hyperpigmentation, that doesn't exist for most women.
Our men's detox facial is designed around this reality. It's not a relabeled standard facial. The protocol involves:
Deep enzymatic and mechanical exfoliation calibrated for thicker skin
Thorough extraction addressing sebaceous congestion and follicular plugging
Targeted active ingredients for pore minimization, oil regulation, and barrier repair
Calming and anti-inflammatory actives for post-shave sensitivity and redness
The results are immediately visible, with clarity, improved texture, reduced congestion, and the treatment supports the long-term skin health goals we're working toward.
Back and Body Treatments
The back is one of the most clinically important areas in men's skin health that receives essentially no routine attention.
From a skin cancer standpoint, the back is a high-risk location for melanoma, and one that is genuinely difficult to examine yourself. Men who have never had a professional visual assessment of their back have a crucial gap in their preventive care.
Our back treatments address: acne and congested follicles (extremely common in men due to sebum production and follicular density on the back), keratosis pilaris, hyperpigmentation from past breakouts or sun damage, and overall texture. We incorporate a thorough visual skin assessment as part of the treatment, just in case we need to push a dermatology visit next. It's one of the ways we catch things that benefit from early attention.
Hormone Optimization
This is the foundation that makes everything else work better.
Testosterone is the primary anabolic hormone in men. It regulates muscle protein synthesis, bone density, red blood cell production, cardiovascular function, cognitive performance, mood, and skin health, including collagen synthesis, barrier function, sebum regulation, and wound healing.
As testosterone declines, beginning gradually in the 30s and accelerating through the 50s and 60s, virtually everything it regulates begins to shift. Fatigue. Body composition changes. Mood and motivation. Sleep quality. Libido. And yes, visibly, the skin.
Our hormone optimization approach starts with reviewing a comprehensive lab panel, diet and lifestyle, in the context of the patient's symptoms and goals. We don't treat numbers in isolation like a typical hormone clinic. We treat people. What constitutes optimal testosterone varies; the goal is not to hit an arbitrary reference range but to reach a level that eliminates symptoms and supports long-term health. Some people may need the additional support of a physician and prescription, others may do fine with diet and lifestyle changes alone. It is not one size fits all.
When hormone health is addressed, everything else, like treatments, topicals, and nutrition, works better. This is what "inside-out" means in practice.
Nutrition and Lifestyle Integration
Skin and hormones don't exist in isolation from diet, sleep, and systemic health.
Chronic inflammation, driven by poor diet, poor sleep, and unmanaged stress, accelerates aging at every level. It degrades collagen. It disrupts the skin barrier. It worsens insulin sensitivity, which affects sebum production and acne. It impairs the hormonal signaling that everything else depends on.
We work with patients on the nutritional and lifestyle interventions that support their goals: anti-inflammatory dietary patterns, micronutrient optimization, sleep hygiene, and stress management. This is not generic advice, but rather specific recommendations based on what we observe in lab work and clinical assessment.
How to Start
The right starting point depends on what's most pressing. For some men, it's a comprehensive hormone evaluation. For others, it's addressing a specific aesthetic concern like the back, the hairline, the skin they haven't paid attention to in decades. For many, it's a consultation where we look at the whole picture and build a plan.
Father's Day is a cultural moment worth using. If you're the man who's been meaning to do something about any of this, or if you're the person who loves one, a Bare gift card covers anything from a single consultation to a full treatment series.
The care is here. The science is real. The results are worth it.
